College Personal Statement

My background has contributed a lot in shaping the person I am today.  I grew up in Indonesia, a country with vast Muslim population. In Indonesia racial discrepancy has created endless tension toward Chinese Indonesian minority. Diversity isn’t a celebrated culture as most academic institutions in Indonesia are still not as diverse as in the United States. Public schools in Indonesia are always populated with students of native Indonesians, and private schools are majorly populated with students of Chinese Indonesians. This has been perpetuating racial tensions throughout the country. Personally, I have experienced the sense of racial awkwardness since when I joined a local public university preparation program, where I was the only student with different ethnic background.
