Med School Personal Statement

I was born and raised in Ethiopia, a country that was never colonized, crushed the Italian army in the battle of Adwa in 1896 securing their territorial sovereignty. Since it was an African set up the philosophical way of living was socialism and communism. The entire community believed that doing things together would collectively make each soar into greater heights. My parents were so simplistic in nature, humble and religious to the core; they made sure that such traits were inculcated in their children. At that time, I did not have any desire to pursue a career in a prestigious profession. Arguably, oral health in my village was deemed to be too trivial. Ideally, unconventional and traditional means were used in dealing with oral health. For instance, “Zana” a chewing stick was used to clean our teeth and salt water to treat tooth aches or any gum disease.
